Aalto University decides on tuition fee amounts

Uniform pricing for the bachelor’s programme and the master’s programmes.

Tuition fees apply to bachelor’s and master’s students from countries outside the EU and EEA who are admitted to study in the degree programmes taught in a language other than Finnish or Swedish starting on 1 August 2017 or later.  According to the decision made by the President of Aalto University, the tuition fee is €12 000 per academic year for the International Business BScBA degree programme and €15 000 for degree programmes leading to a master’s degree. Aalto University offers more than fifty master’s degree programmes taught in English as well as one bachelor’s degree programme taught in English.

The introduction of tuition fees is based on the amendment of the Universities Act that came into effect on 1 January 2016. Along with this amendment, tuition fees are compulsory for students from countries outside the EU/EEA who participate in education in bachelor’s or master’s degree programmes taught in a language other than Finnish or Swedish. The universities are obliged to start charging tuition fees in autumn 2017 at the latest.

The revenue from tuition fees will be used to develop teaching and learning services, to train teachers as well as to build and maintain a scholarship system. In addition, some of the revenue from tuition fees will be channelled back to the students as scholarships. The level of the tuition fees will be reviewed annually. The possible changes will apply to those students who start their studies after the review has been made.

A scholarship system to tuition fees

In addition to the introduction of tuition fees, the reformed Universities Act (Yliopistolaki 558/2009) requires the university to have a scholarship programme to support students who participate in a fee-charging degree programme. At Aalto University, the scholarship is granted in the form of a tuition fee waiver. The decisions on the scholarships are made on the basis of the academic merits of the students selected to study the programmes. The details of the scholarship system will be decided upon later. Aalto University is also building an incentive scholarship system that will reward progress made in studies.
