Master's Programme in Automation and Electrical Engineering

Double degree with Technische Universität Darmstadt

The next application period is open 15 January – 31 January 2026.

We are excited to offer a double degree programme in partnership with in Germany. Students in the Master’s Programme in Automation and Electrical Engineering can apply for double degree studies at TU Darmstadt. This double degree option is open for students of all the three majors of the programme. This double degree programme provides a broad range of subjects, allowing students to enhance their expertise in Communications and Electrical Engineering. Additionally, living and studying in two different countries will equip students with essential cross-cultural communication and collaboration skills. The language of instruction is English.

Double degree students spend their first two semesters of Master’s studies (60 ECTS of courses) at Aalto University and then move to TU Darmstadt for the second year of studies. During their time at TU Darmstadt, students will take 30ECTS of courses and also write their Master’s thesis (30 ECTS), supervised by professors from both institutions. Upon completion, students will graduate with two Master’s degrees and certificates, one from Aalto University and one from TU Darmstadt. With a unique and prestigious qualification, our double degree programme enhances employability and increases eligibility for international job opportunities.

Students admitted in master’s admissions can apply to the double degree programme during their first year of Automation and Electrical Engineering master's studies. Aalto BSc graduates can apply to the double degree programme when they meet the programme eligibility criteria (60 ECTS master’s studies completed by 30 June of the application year, see more detailed info below).

Curriculum of the programme

The curriculum will be drafted individually for each student with the professors of the programme based on the curriculum of Automation and Electrical Engineering Programme (CRAS, EDS or EPEE majors), , and the student’s own interests.

On the above mentioned TU Darmastadt page, there is the TU Darmstadt module handbook with all English taught courses. Please click and select faculty "Dept. 18-Electrical Engineering and Information Technology".
For the winter semester select at the left side "Course catalogue Winter term". For the summer semester select "Course catalogue Summer Term". If the upcoming semesters are not yet listed, one may have a good orientation by choosing the equivalent term from the previous year, since most of the modules are offered in an annual cycle.

Students are also allowed to take courses from other departments such as Department of Informatics and Department of Mechanical Engineering. The courses from Department of Law and Economics as well as courses from Department of Psychology might not be available to all students.

Students who are chosen to the programme may apply for Erasmus+-scholarship for their studies in Germany.
