Case 3 - Iringa, Tanzania
Organisation
Lyra in Africa
Location
Iringa, Tanzania
Theme
Sanitation and Public Infrastructure
In rural Tanzania, only 3% of girls complete secondary school, with long commutes exposing them to safety risks and increasing dropout rates. Lyra in Africa (Lyra) addresses this challenge by building hostels that provide a secure learning environment. However, sanitation remains a critical issue, with failed biofil systems leading to the use of unsustainable septic tanks and soak pits, while inadequate menstrual waste disposal further strains infrastructure. Additionally, school kitchens rely on firewood, contributing to deforestation and placing extra burdens on girls.
Lyra seeks sustainable, locally adaptable solutions for sanitation, menstrual waste disposal, and wastewater treatment, with potential for biogas production to support cooking. These innovations aim to improve school sanitation, reduce environmental impact, and create economic opportunities for local communities, offering a scalable model for public institutions across Tanzania.
