The Master's Programme in Hydrogen and Electric Systems provides the student with a holistic view of the hydrogen economy and its value chain. After completing the programme, our graduate is capable of 

• modelling and evaluating different components and relevant technologies in the hydrogen value chain (production, transportation, and end-user sides). 
• integrating clean hydrogen into the power and energy system by constructing or enhancing interaction among different energy sectors through optimal use of resources. 

Master's Programme in Hydrogen and Electric Systems offers two majors:

• Electric Energy and Hydrogen Systems
• Electric Components of Hydrogen Technology
   

Studies that are common in both majors are taken during the first study year.

Students should choose their major in the beginning of the programme. If you are unsure which major to choose, please contact your academic tutor or the Learning Services for advice. Major is confirmed by the approval of the personal study plan (HOPS).

This major provides the student with a systemic view of the hydrogen economy and its value chain. Our graduate can solve complex technical problems and business cases and steer the relevant plans and projects by performing in-depth analyses. The special focus is given to the synergy between the hydrogen economy and power and energy sector, and the role of hydrogen in green transition (systems planning and operation, energy and power markets, 
stakeholders). 

After completing the major, our graduate is able to

• evaluate and analyse the role of hydrogen as a key linker of energy sector including electricity, gas, heat and traffic and the impact of hydrogen economy on relevant stakeholders. 
• design, develop, and optimize complex integrated energy systems and deliver global solutions for building a carbon-neutral society. 
• manage uncertainties when dealing with challenges in the future energy systems. 
• develop and evaluate scenarios on the role of hydrogen products, byproducts, storage, and economy in the future electrified and sustainable society.
• identify the existing and emerging hydrogen-based technologies, is able to analyse the bottlenecks and opportunities of upcoming technologies and can apply them properly at the system level. 
• evaluate the role of possible future game-changer energy actions.
• identify, create and push forward new business opportunities in the hydrogen value chain.

Students are required to complete a Master's Thesis, which is an individual research assignment with a workload corresponding to 30 credits. The thesis is written on a topic related to the student's advanced studies and is agreed upon between the student and a supervisor who specializes in the topic area of the thesis. Master’s Thesis work includes a seminar presentation or equivalent presentation. The Master’s Thesis is a public document and cannot be concealed.

Students choose 25 credits of elective studies. As elective studies, students can complete a minor and/or take individual courses. Students can freely choose a minor or individual courses of their interest to complement the content of their major or to expand knowledge beyond one’s main field of study. Interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial courses are encouraged. 

Minor is selected from the list of available minors in the academic catalogue. 

Individual courses may include 

• courses from any field offered in Aalto 
• Studies form other Finnish Universities 
• Studies completed during exchange studies abroad 
• Practical training credits (max 5 ECTS)

Studies in the master’s programme should provide students with new knowledge. Studies that overlap or have similar content with studies that are included in student’s bachelor’s degree primarily cannot be included in master’s degree. 

In general, elective studies must be university or university of applied sciences level studies. Universities also offer courses that are targeted for a larger audience. The suitability of these studies is evaluated taking into consideration the learning outcomes of the programme and the aims of the Master of Science (technology) degree. 

Compulsory language studies

Compulsory language studies are included as part of the Finnish Bachelor’s degree for students who have studied in Finland and whose language of education is Finnish or Swedish. If the language studies have not been completed in the student’s Bachelor’s degree, the student must take 2 ECTS in the second national language and 3 ECTS in one foreign language, including both oral and written proficiency.

Students who have received their education in a language other than Finnish or Swedish, or received their education abroad, are required to complete only 3 ECTS in one foreign language, including both oral and written proficiency. Relevant courses (marked with ‘o’ and ‘w’) are offered by the Aalto University Language Center. Alternatively, these students can choose 3 ECTS of Finnish courses, hence not covering the requirement of oral/written proficiency but meeting the language requirement of the degree.

Language studies are included in students’ elective studies and are agreed in the personal study plan (HOPS).

This major provides the student with ability to develop technological solutions for the hydrogen value chain from production, transport, storage, and conversion to interaction with power and energy sector. Our graduate can model different components and perform in-depth efficiency, functionality and safety analyses to provide a practical solution for a smooth green transition. The special focus is given to supporting the power and energy sector and making sure of their secure interaction. 

After completing the major, our graduate has learned how to analyse the dynamic and steadystate behavior of the existing and upcoming components, and is able to

• classify and evaluate the technologies in the hydrogen value chain that aim to decarbonise the power and energy sector, industrial processes, and end-users. 
• model and conduct analyses on the functionality and societal impacts of the existing and emerging hydrogen technologies.
• analyse and evaluate the role of hydrogen components at different stages of the value chain such as production and conversion, transportation, storage, distribution and utilization, and evaluate their behavior, connection, control, and synergies with power and energy sector. 
• analyse and develop the components and feasible technical solutions for optimal operation and planning of power and energy sector.
• identify, create and push forward new business opportunities related to hydrogen technologies.
• apply the principles of capturing, storing and usage of the products and byproducts of hydrogen in the hydrogen value chain.
• manage uncertainties when dealing with challenges in the future energy technologies.
