Developing renewable energy concepts at workshop in Brazil

“The moment I saw the ad, I knew I wanted to participate the workshop”, Sanjay Shah, student of Process Systems Engineering, says.

Sanjay Shah has been selected as School’s student presentative for the Renewable energy – a pathway to the future workshop held in Rio de Janeiro October 19-21. The workshop is part of NOBRE, which is a Finnish-Brazilian network of biomass and renewable energy devoted to active collaboration of Finnish and Brazilian universities, companies and governmental agencies. The goal of the network is to promote joint projects, educational programs, business opportunities, conferences and workshops.

Practical courses at Aalto

Several reasons led Sanjay Shah to decide to apply for the workshop. “I am interested in renewable energy concept and I have already been to similar kind of seminars, which turned out to be rewarding in many perspectives. I have completed many renewable energy related courses and my master thesis is focused on developing production pathway that utilizes renewable resources as their feedstock. I also wanted to broaden my international network."

Shah has been very happy with his studies at Aalto.

“I feel like I made the right decision by moving to Finland for my University studies. In general, studying in Finland has changed my academic as well as daily lifestyle in a positive way. The country itself is full of nature and greenery, plus the people are very calm and honest, and of course Sauna and mämmi (Finnish Easter pudding) are great. And studying in Aalto has improved my academic performance, professional confidence as well as provided me with solid background. As a chemical engineering student, I have enjoyed studying many courses but “Plant Design II” would be my favorite."

What is the best part of studying at Aalto?

“The best has been the freedom to choose courses from any School or Department. Secondly, most of the courses have practical approach and outcome. And the university has advance and modern laboratories.”

Sanjay Shah feels excited as well as stressed to be the one to represent Aalto university by participating in this workshop.

“I am expecting to learn and deepen my knowledge in renewable energy concepts, share my knowledge in this field as well as widen my network."

At the workshop Shah participates an innovation competition. In competition, there are five four member teams (two members from Brazil and two from Finland in each team). The winning team wins 50 000 real (~18 000 EUR) for further development of their innovation.
