Päivi Helander's work and research focus on graphic design and visual communication in relation to architecture, space, and material culture. Her particular research interests include Finnish furniture design of the late 1940s and 1950s, as well as post-World War II interior design in the Nordic countries, which she examines through editorial design, visual narratives, and archival research.
Helander holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Turku and studied graphic design at UCLA in Los Angeles. She has worked in publishing, design, and marketing communications in Munich, Hamburg, and Helsinki, and founded her own studio in 2019 after previously serving as creative director and partner at a multidisciplinary design agency. Helander's professional work is centered on non-fiction books on design and architectural history – where she works as editor, writer, and designer – as well as the visual and conceptual design of museum exhibitions.
Since 2019, she has served as a visiting project lecturer at Aalto University's School of Arts, Design and Architecture, where her teaching and professional work address spatial expression, contemporary graphic design, and the intersections of architecture, design, and visual culture.
