Beat the Blues! events are: At Otaniemi campus (Otakaari 1, Undergraduate Center). Free of charge. Open ɫɫÀ² international community. We wish that you register in advance, so that we can prepare enough snacks. We offer a safe space and time for coming together and discussing with international students. You are warmly welcome - come as you are!

Autumn 2025

Living in Finland

WHEN: Wednesday 24th September at 16.00-18.00

REGISTER: Link will be added in the end of August. (Registration is open until the beginning of the event. You may join spontaneously without registration if there are available places.)

How has it been to live in Finland, so far? What has surprised you? What has brought you joy? Has something been difficult and if so, how have you overcome it? How have your encounters with Finns been? Have you made new friends? It doesn’t matter, whether you are taking your first steps in Finland or have already lived here for longer. We wish that you come and share your experiences, they might also be valuable to others! 

Event starts with introductions and getting to know other participants. We'll continue with an introduction (by Sasha Spurná) on how to make friends and connect with others in Finland. We continue with relaxed workshopping around the topic. Snacks are provided! Please register in advance using the registration link above, registaration provides us valuable information for practical arrangements.

Culture shock 

WHEN: Wed 22nd October at 16.00-18.00 

WHERE: Otakaari 1, 5th floor, room U523 Top Lounge

From honeymoon to the black hole and back! Adjusting to life in a new country is similar to other transitions, like moving to a new city or starting a new job, but with the added dimensions of adapting to cultural and language differences. Cultural adjustments can affect people living far from home in unexpected ways. Come and learn what can happen during your stay in Finland and how it may affect your studies especially at the beginning. And if you already have been in Finland for longer and feel that you have found a way to cope through and with the culture shock, come and share your valuable Top Tips for the newcomers! 

Event starts with an introduction (by Mari Dagnall) to culture and learning shocks and ways of coping with cultural adjustment. We continue with relaxed discussions and workshopping around these themes. Snacks are provided! Please register in advance using the registration link above. From winter-blues to embracing winter 

WHEN: Wed 19th November at 16.00-18.00 

WHERE: Otakaari 1, 5th floor, room U523 Top Lounge

Have you heard stories about a long and dark Finnish winter? Are you wondering how to get through the season, let alone enjoy it? No worries, you are not alone and there are actually many ways to find joy during the winter season in Finland!  

This event will concentrate on going from winter-blues to embracing winter. We will start with an introduction to the topic (by Aino Turunen), by sharing some practical tips, in addition to concrete ideas on how you can embrace the wintertime. The session will also include workshopping with others around these themes. Snacks are provided! Please register in advance using the registration link above. The Starting Point of Wellbeing offers students easy access to counselling and advice on matters of well-being and study ability. The services available to you include drop-in (no reservation) advising/counselling sessions, peer support groups, and online materials.
