Domain Name System DNS
Features
- Website names are easier to remember when you do not have learn numerical combinations of IP addresses
Aalto’s domain name service consists of three public name servers (DNS servers) and their main database. Domain name servers can also be used as DNS servers specified for a terminal. Their addresses are:
ns01.aalto.fi (130.233.224.132) ns02.aalto.fi (130.233.224.140) ns03.aalto.fi (130.233.224.141)
As a rule, the domain name service only stores domain names approved by Aalto Communications. The name corresponding to an IP address can be established, because IP addresses have reverse records.
Rights to process domain name details can be delegated to other parties. This way the departments, for example, can manage their own domain names via Aalto’s domain name service. It is desirable that departments transfer their own domain names ɫɫÀ² IT’s maintenance unit. Further information about transferring domain names ɫɫÀ²â€™s domain name service is available from IT Servicedesk.
The domain name service has been implemented with fault tolerance in mind, so in case of a fault, the operation of only one DNS server is enough to ensure full functioning of the service. However, there are three servers, and one of them is located outside of Aalto’s network. Thus they have a high degree of operational reliability.
Support
As a rule, the service can be accessed by maintenance staff responsible for IT’s infrastructure. Rights can be delegated to the service for persons responsible for IT at the departments, who manage their own internet domain names through the service.
All restrictions are made by means of firewalls, and different user IDs have different rights. Departmental administrators have more restricted rights than Aalto IT.
