Welcoming our summer visiting professors and researchers! - A!BP Hosts summer visitors through the ASCI and TFK Programmes

During their stay, A!BP, the visiting professors and visiting researchers had multiple presentations on their most recent research findings, which also initiated discussions for the Bio-LCArch project. Furthermore, the stay included tours in Aalto University and networking around Helsinki.

As part of the TFK Bio-LCArch Project, A!BP had the opportunity and pleasure to host 2 visiting professors over the summer.

Junjie Li is a Distinguished Professor at the School of Architecture and Design, Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) and a recipient of a national young talent award in China. During her visit at A!BP, we will continue developing joint educational activities between Aalto University and BJTU as part of our ongoing Bio-LCArch project, funded by the Finnish National Agency for Education (TFK).

Through this project, we are strengthening educational collaboration between Finland and China, exploring innovative teaching methods, and bringing together Architecture and Civil Engineering education to promote the use of sustainable natural materials for comfortable, energy-efficient, and healthy buildings.

We are currently developing specialised teaching materials and co-designing curriculum modules to help future engineers and architects gain the knowledge and skills needed to implement bio-based constructions in practice.

Mariano Pierantozzi is Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering and Geology of the "G. d'Annunzio" University of Chieti (Pescara, Italy). His teaching and research activities focus on building physics, the energy performance of buildings, and the application of numerical methods and artificial intelligence to scientific research. His help was fundamental for developing online teaching materials on data analysis and artificial intelligence applied to laboratory test results for bio- and geo-based construction materials!

In addition to our visiting professors, we also welcomed 3 visiting researchers from different universities over the summer. Habib Jalili joined us as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Building Physics for the summer (ASCII Summer Programme) and during his PhD, he worked on the analysis of earthen building materials, with a focus on their hygrothermal properties. His doctoral research investigated methods for determining the hygroscopic properties of earthen materials based on the elementary properties of soils. During his postdoc at Aalto University, he will do research on the moisture retention and sorption isotherm curve of ultralight earth and bio-based insulation materials.

Leonardo Guglielmi is a third-year PhD fellow in Engineering at the University "G. d'Annunzio" of Chieti-Pescara (Italy), specialising in building physics and indoor environmental quality. During his PhD, he has developed validated CFD models for indoor environment analysis, calibrated against in situ experimental measurements of air velocity, temperature, humidity, and COâ‚‚ distribution. He has also worked on the experimental characterisation of insulation materials using the HFM (Heat Flow Meter) method.

At A!BP, his research stay focuses on the use of combined HAM and CFD simulations, calibrated with experimental measurements, to study the effect of air velocity on the Moisture Buffering Value (MBV) of 3D-printed clay components, using COMSOL Multiphysics.

Arina Ivanova is a 5th‑year student in the integrated BSc+MSc program in Structural Engineering at Tallinn University of Technology. During her studies, her interest in low-carbon building materials has led her to explore experimental methods to assess mould growth in bio-based composites. At A!BP, Arina will be investigating the durability of bio-insulation materials using accelerated ageing tests.
