This summer is the perfect time to deep-dive into the essentials of machine learning at Aalto University. European university network Unite! offers the summer course Human-Centered Machine Learning free of charge for students of the Unite! network in collaboration with Aalto University Summer School.

Human-Centered Machine Learning is an innovative and hands-on Bachelor's level course on the main components and combinations of current machine learning systems. This two-week course takes place in August 2022 and teaches students some of the most widely used machine learning techniques while they explore the best Finnish summer has to offer.

Artificial Intelligence and machine learning are the that organisations are using today to make informed decisions, attract new customers and find new sources of revenue. Businesses increasingly implement AI and machine learning algorithms and tools as part of their services and business strategies.

According to findings from the by Silo.AI, one of Europe’s largest private AI and machine learning labs, Finland has the largest number of companies utilizing artificial intelligence in the Nordic countries.

‘Machine learning is transforming the world as we know it. Many have had their current job or partner chosen partially by machine learning algorithms that recommend job ads or user profiles on social networks. So far, the design of machine learning methods has mainly focused on technical aspects such as predictive power. However, the successful use of machine learning must consider the needs of its human users. These needs include the respect of privacy and the desire for transparent operation principles.’ says Alex Jung, Assistant Professor at Aalto University and course teacher.

‘The summer school Human-Centered Machine Learning teaches some key principles for privacy-preserving, transparent and trustworthy machine learning. After completing this course, students will be able to design and analyze machine learning methods that focus on the needs of its human user.’ Jung continues.

‘This collaboration results in the opportunity to learn about these disruptive technologies in an international setting, where students can learn from each other in an active and welcoming environment. We look forward to meeting the visiting students from the Unite! network here on Aalto University campus.’ says Marcela Acosta, Program Manager at Aalto University.
