Student Lisa Petry: Signals are present in nearly every field of engineering and technology

Lisa Petry, a master's student in the Signal Processing and Data Science major, thinks that the increasing adoption of AI in industries highlights the need for skilled professionals who can work with data and therefore can provide a deeper understanding of the world around us based on given data.

Why did you choose the Master's Programme in Computer, Communication and Information Sciences: Signal Processing and Data Science?

Signal Processing always stood out to me because of its versatility and wide range of applications. Signals are present in nearly every field of engineering and technology, as they can represent anything from sound and images to sensor measurements. Combined with Data Science, they enable the extraction of valuable information, providing a deeper understanding of the world around us. This major was the perfect blend of engineering and computer science, aligning with both my technical interests and the future direction of technology.

What does the future of the industry look like?

The demand for signal processing and data science is widespread, meaning the skills developed during these studies are highly sought after across all fields. With the increasing adoption of AI in more and more industries, the need for skilled professionals who can work with data will continue to grow. This major is the perfect preparation for such a future, as it provides both the theoretical knowledge and practical skills needed to succeed.

What is the best course at Aalto?

It's difficult to say which course is the best at Aalto, as there are so many great options to choose from. My favourites were those with a strong focus on real-world applications. For example, AI in Health Technologies combined theory with real-world healthcare applications, allowing us to see how these new technologies can affect and help people around us. Programming Parallel Computers was a particularly challenging but rewarding course, where each week presented a new goal of optimising and speeding up one's previous week's code. Other courses, like Audio Signal Processing, demonstrate how technical concepts can also be applied in creative ways, such as coding audio effects used in music production.

What is studying at Aalto like in practice?

Studying at Aalto has been great so far! The university offers so much flexibility that choosing courses can sometimes be difficult with so many options available. The campus area has everything a student might need, both great in terms of study places and relaxing hangout spots. The vibrant student community makes it easy to pursue your interests, with events like hackathons and career-focused activities happening regularly. At the same time, Aalto promotes a healthy work-life balance through wellbeing-focused events.

What is the best thing about student life?

The best thing about student life is the strong sense of community fostered by the guilds, clubs, and societies on campus. There's always something happening, whether it's parties, board game nights, or other fun events, so it's hard ever to feel bored. As an international student, I especially appreciated the efforts of the international committee in introducing us to Finnish teekkari culture and traditions. One of my best memories was receiving my teekkari cap on Wappu, a moment that truly made me feel part of the community.
