"The European Commission has identified batteries as a strategic value chain. The EU must step up investment and innovation capacity strengthening the European industrial competitiveness by policy strategy, building a globally integrated, sustainable and competitive base.

Batteries maintain to be a topic of high interest of the European Commission and several Member States. Under the European Battery Alliance, several actions of the Strategic Plan on Batteries of the European Commission are getting implemented by various stakeholders, including the Commission itself, Member States representatives, research organisations, universities, industry, and various associations.

The European Commission has just published an update on the activities in the 'Fourth Report on the State of the Energy Union’, which includes the document on the â€˜Implementation of the Strategic Action Plan on Batteries’. Related to that there is also a report on the â€˜Progress in Accelerating Clean Energy Innovation 2018’ and a working document on the â€˜Batteries Directive’.

The importance of raw materials and advanced materials as key enablers for the green energy transition and sustainable mobility is reflected, where EIT RawMaterials contributed to some of these documents by highlighting specific innovation and education actions conducted by the EIT RawMaterials Innovation Community." - Dr Roland Gauss, Senior Advisor – Substitution and Recycling at EIT RawMaterials roland.gauss@eitrawmaterials.eu, 15 April 2019
