Starting studies in a double degree Master’s programme was the first time student Fabrizio Valdivia moved abroad

Bolivian Fabrizio Valdivia combines his Master’s studies in Aalto University and University College Dublin. He is writing his thesis with a Finnish company and plans to learn from the industry in Europe and then apply that knowledge in his home country to create development and opportunities.

How did you find out about the programme? What made you choose it?

I found the Zero Defect programme through the EIT platform when I was looking to start my Master's studies abroad. The programme caught my attention at the first glance. As an industrial engineer, I always seek excellence in the industry, and clearly, the Zero Defect Programme offered that. I became even more interested when I learned about the summer school, which focuses on entrepreneurship and future innovative businesses.

Describe your experience with the application process. Any tips for future applicants?
Without any doubt, of all the platforms I have applied to, EIT is the best. It is very comprehensive and dynamic. I can confidently say that it is one of the best scholarship platforms in existence.

What kind of other international experience did you have before?

I have never lived abroad before, except for vacations, so this is my first experience living and establishing my life in a foreign country. Initially, I had many fears, but both Aalto University and University College Dublin had everything well-organized with their welcome events. Thanks to these events, I quickly connected with incredible people who soon became my friends, and together we have shared many unique experiences. I can confidently say that I have adapted well and thoroughly enjoyed my time here in Europe.

What have you liked the most about this programme so far?

Almost everything. At University College Dublin, I had courses dedicated to industries, such as supply chain, operations management, project management, and finance. These courses are essential in today's competitive industry. At Aalto, I really enjoyed the entrepreneurial ecosystem, where I took the startup experience course. Above all, I can say that I have enjoyed most of the courses I have taken. Some were more difficult than others, but both covered the most important and essential aspects of their fields. Connecting with people from all over the world is something I have also enjoyed immensely. I am happy that I have been able to form friendships with people from various parts of the globe, friendships that will always last.

What are you looking forward to?

I plan to work here and take full advantage of my opportunity to be abroad. I aim to secure a role in a company and deeply respect the culture of each country. My plan is to learn from the industry and the European vision in the industry and then apply that knowledge in my home country in the future. My dream is to create development and opportunities in Bolivia, and I believe there is no better place to learn all this than in Europe.

I am thrilled to be able to do my thesis in a company here in Finland, as it provides me with my first real interaction with a European company. I hope this experience will lead to a job opportunity, and if not, I know it is the first step toward starting my professional life abroad.

For whom would you recommend this?

I would recommend the Zero Defect Manufacturing programme to any industrial or production engineer or anyone belonging to any branch of the current industry. The Zero Defect Manufacturing programme seeks excellence in the industry, not only in the manufacturing stage but also starting from the raw materials. It is a programme where all factors are analyzed to achieve the highest industrial standards. I also recommend it to individuals who are passionate about entrepreneurship, where innovation and sustainability are essential for the businesses of the future.
