Within the community of Information Systems (IS) researchers, the IS Senior Scholars’ Basket of Journals () is the most often used tool for distinguishing high-quality academic publications and ranking job applicants to academic positions. The IS Basket includes eight scholarly journals which are all ranked JUFO3. Each year, the Association for Information Systems (AIS) produces a listing of the most prolific authors and universities.

In 2019, with his three published articles in IS Basket Journals, Aalto University School of Business researcher Esko Penttinen was ranked #2 among researchers employed by a European university and #13 globally.

Penttinen’s work addressed human-automation interaction (article appeared in MIS Quarterly), motivations for business process outsourcing (Journal of Information Technology), and organizing for virtual work (Information Systems Journal). The year was a successful one for Penttinen as, in addition to the above-mentioned IS Basket articles, six other publications produced by him and his co-authors appeared in IS journals and conferences.

Esko Penttinen currently works on organizational deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotic process automation, explainable AI, legacy system discontinuance, and deskilling caused by AI-powered machines.

‘I hope to keep up the stream of high-level IS publications about these topics also in the near future,’ Esko Penttinen says.

Esko Penttinen works as a Professor of Practice of Information Systems in the Department of Information and Service Management. He is also co-founder and chairman of XBRL Finland ().
