Dean Kari Tammi has appointed the following professors:

Jari Vepsälainen

Jari Vepsäläinen, D.Sc. (Tech.), has been appointed as Assistant professor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering for period of 1.9.2023 - 31.8.2026. The field of the professorship is Mechatronics.

Vepsäläinen did his doctorate at Aalto University's Department of Mechanical Engineering in 2019 with the topic Towards Robust Electric City Bus Fleets. Previously worked as a Senior Data Scientist at Capgemini Finland. In Aalto University he has worked several years as a researcher teaching and researching data science, machine learning, creativity of engineers and power transmission design.

He has taught in various mechanical engineering courses, such as mechanics, statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials and mechatronics. He was the main developer of a course MEC-E5012 - Vehicle Mechatronics: Control, which he then taught as the main teacher during the fall of 2020. He is currently updating the bi-annual counterpart, MEC-E5011 Vehicle Mechatronics: Powertrain.

At the beginning of 2020, he worked as a startup entrepreneur at Sauma.io, which developed self-learning data graph technology for engineers. Sauma.io was selected from among more than 100 applicants among twenty startups for the three-week KIUAS bootcamp.

Sanandam Bordoloi

Dr Sanandam Bordoloi has been appointed as Assistant professor at the Department of Civil Engineering for the period of 1.10.2023–30.9.2026. The field of the professorship is Geotechnical Engineering. He works in the Mineral-based materials and mechanics research group.

He has previously worked as a Post-doctoral Research Associate at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign in 2021–2023 and at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in 2019-2021. Bordoloi received his doctorate in Geotechnical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati, in 2019.

Sanandam Bordoloi has been working with circular economy and reduction of CO2 footprint of construction field. He has studied the effects of climate change on geo-environmental infrastructures for instance low-to-medium level hazardous landfills. His research project Surface modified fly ash (SuMo Fly ash) for value added applications dealt with the utilisation of industrial by-products in high value polymer industry.

He has solid experimental experience in geotechnical and geo-environmental engineering research. In particular, he has expertise in partially saturated soil slope stabilisation using vegetation, biochar, and bio-fibre. His research also has a link to the research conducted at the Department of Built Environment.

Assistant Professor Andrea Ferrantelli

Andrea Ferrantelli

Dr Andrea Ferrantelli has been appointed as Assistant professor at the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering for the period 1.10.2023-30.9.2027. The field of the professorship is Energy Efficient and Resilient Buildings.

He has previously worked several years as Senior researcher in the Nearly Zero Energy Buildings Research Group and the Smart City Centre of Excellence at the Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture in Tallinn University of Technology. From 2011 to 2016 he worked as Postdoctoral researcher and teacher at Aalto University, Department of Civil Engineering.

Ferrantelli defended his doctoral thesis Gravitino phenomenology and cosmological implications of supergravity in theoretical physics at the University of Helsinki in 2010. The supervisor of the dissertation was Professor Kari P. Enqvist.

His research area covers building physics and energy efficiency aiming at high indoor environmental quality, highly energy performing and sustainable buildings, and flexible use of clean but variable energy.  He is an experienced teacher with a strong theoretical background.
