CHEM-E2225 Wood Material Science (5 cr) course is organized for the first time in the online format in spring 2023. You may follow the course independently whenever it is suitable for you during III period 10.1. – 14.2.2023. The course includes short videos, texts, exercises and online exams. The course starts with an online introduction 10.1.2023 at 10:15. Register to the course by 16.1.2023:

Understanding the anatomy of wood is the basis for creating high-quality wooden products, structures and design.

Mark Hughes, Professor

This course is aimed at students wishing to specialize in the materials science of wood, this course will also be of interest to students of architecture, civil & structural engineering, materials science & engineering and related disciplines, who have an interest in the possibilities offered by wood. The course covers wood formation, wood structure & anatomy, wood-water relationships, and the physical properties of wood, including wood density & porosity, fluid flow in wood, the thermal & hygrothermal properties of wood, as well as acoustic properties. The course also covers short- and long-term mechanical properties and introduces students to the main agents responsible for wood degradation.

More practical information about the course will be updated later in the year in MyCourses:

This course describes the molecular structure of wood and explains for example how moisture influences the structure and properties. (Daniela Altgen)

To support learning the course includes several short videos, such as presented below. Even more videos can be found from this Youtube-channel:

This course is part of Aalto Wood minor but can be taken separately. Find out about other Wood science courses and Aalto Wood minor from the link below:
