New regional ideas for Turku and Kotka

More with Less - From Resource Scarcity to Social Abundance
Aalto University School of Engineering

The traditional IFHP Urban Planning and Design Summer School 2015 had design workshops in Turku and Kotka in August. The workshop theme was 鈥More with Less - From Resource Scarcity to Social Abundance鈥.

Nearly 40 students and young professionals from all corners of the world developed ideas and solutions for new regional connections and engaged in creative place-making.

In both cities, participants found new ways to combine human and natural processes, leading to fresh types of urban environment and public urban space. Local resources were re-interpreted and re-contextualised to 鈥 indeed 鈥 achieve more with less.

The Summer School experience was excellent both for the cities and students. The planning of Hirvensalo-Uittamo in Turku and Karhula-Jumalniemi in Kotka got many new and relevant ideas.

Happy with the successful event, Tampere University of Technology, School of Architecture and Aalto University Land Use Planning and Urban Studies Group (YTK) will continue as Summer School鈥檚 organizing partners with the International Federation of Housing and Planning (IFHP). Preparations of the 2016 Summer School are already in progress.
