The Near futures online exhibition showcases projects in honor of master’s graduates and gives its viewers an outlook of what the future may hold in the world of design, sustainable materials and engineering. Initially meant to be held live at the Graduation Party in June, this exhibition has now been transferred online and is available to viewers until October 31st, 2020 due to the current situation.

The exhibition consists of eight projects and degree works created by master’s students from all six schools. Central themes of these projects include future solutions through environmentally sustainable innovation as well as new materials and technology. The content of this exhibition is exceptionally topical considering the current situation, when innovation in policies, design and technology is greatly needed.

“Our current global crisis in spring 2020 has proven how quickly our future outlook can change and how adaptable we need to be to limit any negative consequences”, says exhibition curator Marjolein van der Loo.

Projects showcased range from styrofoam-like biodegradable packaging material and carbon footprint data on different diets, to fog collectors that can be used in drought-ridden areas. This exhibition is an expression of Aalto University’s crossdisciplinarity and its student’s ambition to create social impact and practice critical thinking.
