The Young Artist of the Year 2025: Man Yau

Man Yau, a sculptor who graduated with a Master’s degree from Aalto University’s Product and Spatial Design program, has won the Young Artist of the Year 2025 award. This recognition includes a €25,000 grant from the City of Tampere and the opportunity to host a solo exhibition at the Tampere Art Museum.

Yau’s artistic work explores the feeling of “being on display and under pressure,” which she approaches from the perspective of a woman and a BIPOC artist. BIPOC is an acronym for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.

Yau’s work incorporates the cultural nuances of different materials and the emotions and associations they evoke. "I work with sculptures and installations, often imitating everyday objects and aesthetic symbols of power. The materials and the cultural associations they reflect are central to me," Yau explains.

Her pieces draw on borrowed beauty ideals, such as Chinoiserie decoration, as well as larger spatial constructs like monarch gardens—places where power manifests in the forced symmetry of living elements.

“I use challenging materials like clay, silk, metal, and glass to evoke feelings and meanings. For instance, ceramics may point to the culture I’m assumed to come from, silk to the commercialization of the exotic, and glass to fragility.”

Yau’s works have been exhibited both nationally and internationally, in countries such as England, Sweden, and Japan. Currently, her pieces can be seen at the Pitted Dates gallery in Helsinki and in a collection exhibition opening in February at Kiasma, the Museum of Contemporary Art.

The goal of the Young Artist of the Year award is to support internationally promising Finnish artists under the age of 35. It has already been highlighting new Finnish contemporary art for four decades.

Graphic Designer of the Year 2025: Päivi Helander

Päivi Helander, the Graphic Designer of the Year, is a versatile visual designer whose work spans color design, publications, spaces, and events. With a long career in the field, Helander currently runs her own design studio and teaches at Aalto University’s School of Arts, Design and Architecture.

Helander holds a Master’s degree in Philosophy from the University of Turku, majoring in art studies, and has also studied graphic design at UCLA in Los Angeles. Her professional journey has revolved around books, art, and form.

“Surfaces, light, and atmosphere create signs, and the mind assigns meanings. My design is based on aesthetics and sustainability, curiosity, and a fundamental interest in the relationships, origins, and narratives of things,” Helander describes.

The award committee noted that they wanted to reward a distinguished professional whose work naturally extends beyond the traditional boundaries of graphic design.

“Päivi Helander achieves this without falling into generalism. At the same time, she keeps traditional, skill-based, tactile design in the spotlight. As it becomes increasingly easier and more automated to produce beautiful surfaces, the value of meticulous, detail-oriented design work stands out even more.”

“Everything Päivi Helander touches becomes beautiful and functional,” the committee explains their decision.

Studio Päivi Helander specializes in projects involving books, art, design, and architecture. Her work has included creating the visual identity for the New Standards exhibition at the 2021 Venice Biennale and compiling a project on interior architect Olof Ottelin’s life’s work in collaboration with Sinka and the Museum of Finnish Architecture. Since 2024, she has also served as a creative advisor for Habitare, curating the event’s theme area. Known for her sharp eye for color, Helander designed the core color palette for Cover Story Paint.

The Graphic Designer of the Year recognition, awarded annually by Grafia, celebrates outstanding work in the field of visual communication design and efforts to elevate the standards and reputation of the profession in Finland.
