The prestigious business publication Financial Times has given international recognition to the sustainability education of the Aalto University School of Business. Financial Times praises, among other things, the holistic sustainability approach in the School of Business. Responsible Business Education Award 2024 was awarded to four other universities in addition ɫɫÀ² University School of Business.

In the School of Business, sustainability is embedded in the curriculum through mandatory core courses and overarching learning goals. At bachelor level, the studies start with the Better Business, Better Society course which introduces the basics of responsible business. For more advanced students, e.g. a multidisciplinary Master’s programme in creative sustainability provides students with the skills and knowledge to address pressing global sustainability challenges.

Accountability is another important part of the process. At the end of classes, teaching evaluations ask specific questions on how sustainability is taught and incorporated into learning. That incentivises teachers to embed these issues and do it well. ‘Focusing on sustainability is so natural to us – maybe that’s why we don’t make a big fuss about it,’ Dean Timo Korkeamäki says.

‘This recognition is thanks to dedicated work of many over the years. Three most recent structural changes I’d like to share are that we integrated sustainability aspects in four out of five overarching learning goals covering all programmes. Additionally, we ask in all course feedback how students evaluate sustainability integration in the respective course and in the beginning of Bachelor studies, a core course is all about Business and Society,’ says Professor Minna Halme.
