Code Alphabet MOOC awarded for societal impact

Open online course in coding for teachers receives honorary award in eEemeli competition.

The results for the eEemeli Competition, which searched for the best digital learning solution for 2016, were published on 14 April at the ITK2016 conference in Hämeenlinna.

The main award went to Qridi Oy’s digital assessment tool that works with all devices and simplifies e.g. peer evaluation. However, this year, in addition to the main award, the jury decided to grant an honorary award for societal impact to IT-kouluttajat ry's Code Alphabet MOOC the implementation of which the Aalto University Department of Media has also been actively involved in.

According to the jury, the societal impact and cost effectiveness of the massive open online course launched by volunteers are in a league of their own. The online course has already provided continuing education in coding in line with the curriculum to thousands of comprehensive school teachers. The jury hoped that the realisation of this course would act as a motivational example to others of the power of cooperation, peer learning and open sharing.

This was the 15th year that annual eLearning competition eEemeli was organised.
