Academy Programme funding for research teams

The funded projects will address, among other things, the utilization of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and the health and societal challenges of adapting to climate change, as well as developing new biomaterial composites. Of the funding allowed from the three Academy Programmes to several research consortia in December, Aalto University received a total of 2.7 million euros.
The aim of the C1 Value Academy Programme is to strengthen Finnish scientific knowledge in the utilization of atmospheric carbon dioxide. The programme also aims to slow down the pace of climate change and to help Finland achieve its climate goals. Researchers Miguel Caro, Jan Deska, Riikka Puurunen, Silvan Scheller and Ilkka Tittonen from Aalto University received funding from the programme.
The research subjects include chemical reactions which can be used to transform carbon dioxide into fuel or raw material for the chemical industry, reaction routes, enzymes and catalysts, and improving the energy efficiency of carbon dioxide recovery.
The Tandem Forest Values programme strengthens research cooperation in Finland and Sweden on forest resources, the value chain of wood-based products and wood construction. Researchers Jaana Vapaavuori and Kati Miettunen received funding for the development of new biomaterial composites.
The Climate Change and Health programme will focus in providing the knowledge base for selecting best practices for adaptation to climate change. From this perspective, research projects will address issues such as health and societal challenges as well as the links between specific diseases and climate change. Professori Risto Kosonen received funding for a project to study the health risks of heat.
The Academy of Finland funds a total of 14 Academy Programmes in 2019. The Academy Programmes are thematic research projects that support high-quality multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research, and serve as a platform for networking between researchers and international research cooperation.
