Europe possesses several known deposits of rare earth elements (REEs), but the continent has historically been reliant on imports, particularly from China. Recent geopolitical and economic shifts have emphasised the need for Europe to develop its own rare earth supply chain. Europe is making progress toward establishing a sustainable rare earth supply chain. However, significant challenges remain, particularly in overcoming environmental regulations, transport restrictions, and technical processing barriers. A multi-pronged approach involving domestic mining, international partnerships, technological advancements, and recycling will be key to reducing dependency on China and securing a resilient rare earth industry in Europe.
The webinar will discuss challenges as many European deposits contain mixed rare earth ores, requiring complex separation processes, the mining techniques need to be optimised to balance economic feasibility with environmental sustainability.
