Aalto Center for Qualitative Management Research advances greater cooperation and capacity building around qualitative methodologies.
This symposium is open to all researchers with an interest in qualitative research methods, but especially those with ideas for future research projects on qualitative research methods scholarship. It is facilitated by Professor Tine Köhler (University of Melbourne), Professor Catherine Welch (Trinity College), and Lecturer Maria Rumyantseva (University of Sydney).

Paper development workshop Symposium attendees interested in participating in the paper development workshop are encouraged to submit ideas for future projects or work in progress related to research methods scholarship, on which they would like to receive feedback from methods experts. Most suitable are papers related to one of the two workshop topics, i.e., Qualitative Techniques for Theorizing and Qualitative Restudies and their value for retheorizing, but other topics related to qualitative methods scholarship will also be considered. |

In order to participate in the paper development workshop, participants will be required to submit an outline of their paper idea containing the goal of their study, relevant literature, intended contribution to that literature, and an outline of the design of the empirical part of the paper (maximum 1000 words, excluding references).
Submissions will be taken until 1 May 2026, and confirmation of acceptance will be provided on a rolling basis, typically within 3 weeks from the date of submission of the outline.

Tine Köhler is Professor for International Management at the University of Melbourne, Australia. Her research interests include cross-cultural management, cross-cultural communication and coordination, group processes, qualitative research methods, research design, meta-analysis, and regression. Within those topics, she focuses frequently on teaching and learning related themes. Her work has been published in Organizational Research Methods (ORM), Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of Management, Psychological Methods, Human Resource Management, Entrepreneurship: Theory & Practice, Academy of Management Learning and Education (AMLE), and Small Group Research (SGR) (among others). Prof. Köhler is Co-Editor-in Chief at ORM and previously held Associate Editor roles at ORM and AMLE. She serves on the editorial boards of AMLE, Journal of Management Education, SGR, Journal of Management Studies, Research Methods in Strategy and Management, and Journal of Management Scientific Reports.
Catherine Welch is Chair of Strategic Management at Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, having previously
been a Professor at the University of Sydney, Australia. She is also a Distinguished Visiting Professor at
Aalto University, Finland. Catherine's research has concentrated on approaches to context in
international business research, particularly the use of qualitative research methodology and process
approaches to studying firm internationalization. Her work has appeared in leading journals in
international business and management. She has a track record of launching new disciplinary
conversations and advocating methodological and theoretical pluralism. She was the first author on a
paper that won the 2021 Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) Decade Award. She is Associate
Editor of Organizational Research Methods and Vice-President, Communications, and Newsletter Co-Editor for the Academy of International Business (AIB) Research Methods Shared Interest Group (RM-SIG), of which she was a founding member. She is Fellow of the Academy of International Business
Maria Rumyantseva is a Senior Lecturer and Academic Fellow in Innovation Studies at the University of Sydney Business School, Australia. Her longstanding interest in understanding how research is commercialised informs her studies as she explores this process from a range of perspectives. Maria uses process-based methodologies to demonstrate how qualitative studies can reveal new patterns and critically revisit established theories, bringing in insights from her research of the innovation process. She has published in Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, Organizational Research Methods, and Strategic Management Journal. Prior to joining the University of Sydney, Maria held a postdoc position at the London Business School. She was a visiting scholar at the UC Berkeley, US and SINTEF, Norway. Maria has several years of practical experience, having worked for a major international bank in London.
