The vision of the Ambient Internet of Things (A-IoT) in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is to enable dense, long-lived wireless networks of miniature devices that operate without manual battery replacement by harvesting energy from the environment and communicating with minimal hardware complexity. Recent activities in the sixth-generation (6G) standardization highlight A-IoT as a distinct class that complements legacy massive Internet of Things (IoT) and motivates designs tailored to low power and low cost, including passive and semi-passive radios with energy-neutral operations. This dissertation advances this vision by integrating backscatter communication (BC), sensing, and printed electronics into coherent architectures for sustainable A-IoT schemes.
Key words: Ambient Internet of Things, backscatter communication, sensing, printed electronics, radio frequency, visible light communication, backscatter device, reconfigurable intelligent surface
