CreaTures (Creative Practices for Transformational Futures)

2020-2023

The EU Horizon 2020 funded transdisciplinary research project highlights how creative practices can contribute to addressing climate change and associated effects. The project aims at demonstrating effective paths to achieving sustainability, social cohesion and peaceful co-existence at a time of rapid change. This will be achieved by identifying existing, often hidden transformational creative practices, by supporting new experimentation and direct audience engagement around these practices, and by evaluating their impact.

The three-year research project is coordinated by Aalto University Department of Design and the scientific coordinator of the project is professor Tuuli Mattelmäki. Key researchers from Encore team are post doc Marketa Dolejsova and post doc Namkyu Chun. Other Aalto key personnel in the project include research fellow Andrea Botero, professor of artistic practice Julia Lohmann, professor Sampsa Hyysalo, and project manager Riikka Raitio from the Aalto Research and Innovation Services.

CBCR - Capacity building of Creative Radicals (2021-2022)

Building an outstanding creative community for new thinking

Empowering an experimental culture by building the spaces and practices that encourage us to break boundaries and create novel perspectives

The aim of the project was to empower the whole of the Aalto community in developing a culture of radical creativity. â€‹

The project supports Aalto’s strategic goal of an outstanding creative community for new thinking and the target state of a creative culture that empowers students, faculty, and staff to take risks, experiment, and celebrate diversity and debate.

CAPE 2020-2023

Nils Ehrenberg from Encore and Professor Turkka Keinonen worked together with Danish and Swedish Universities and libraries to explore Civic Agency in Public E-Governance. In the CAPE project, they explored how libraries can function as Civic Innovation centres. They worked together with libraries as they represent public spaces open for everyone that maintain communities, support democracy, and have a strong tradition of supporting participation.

Universities: Aalto University, Aalborg University, IT University of Copenhagen, Malmö University

The CAPE project is funded by Nordforsk via the Academy of Finland.

Sea4Value 2020-2022

Aarne Leinonen and Virpi Roto from Encore group studied new digital services for the first and last miles of the seaway in a new Sea4Value/Fairway research program. The new services should help e.g. the work of pilots. This program relates to Aarne’s Ph.D. studies on the interplay of service and experience design.

Companies: Awake.ai, Brighthouse, Ericsson, ESL Shipping, Finnpilot, Meyer Turku, Neste, Tieto

Authorities: Finnish Border Guard, Finnish Meteorological Institute, Finnish Shipowners\' Association, Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency, Traficom

Research units: Aalto University, Jyväskylä University, Novia, Tampere University, University of Turku

ENACT 2021-2023

Education network for automated and connected transport for sustainable cities (ENACT) was a joint education development project between Finnish universities.

Project partners were Tampere University, University of Lapland, LUT University, University of Turku, University of Vaasa, and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.

InDEx - Dimecc 2020-2022

Industrial Data Excellence (InDEx) researched the value of data as an enabler for the next industrial revolution centered around artificial intelligence in the Finnish manufacturing industry. The project was funded by Business Finland 2020-22. Partners include Danfoss, Elekmerk, Fastems, HT-Laser and KoneCranes..

ATLAS: A map for the future service co-development (1.3.2012 – 31.8.2014)

  • Analyzing, testing and co-developing a map of collaborative methods for service development, design, and innovation.
  • The researchers created ATLAS Co-Creation Game that is a tool for designers and professionals for collaboratively planning service co-creation projects. It can also be used to learn about service co-development and related methods. The design game materials are published under  license and can be downloaded (11,2 MB)

UXUS – Usability and user experience in complex systems (2011-2015)

  • User experience as a competitive edge in B2B metal industry
  • FIMECC Research Programme User Experience and Usability in Complex Systems (UXUS) supports future knowledge creation and creates new interaction concepts and innovative practices in developing the user and customer experience excellence. The overall target of the programme is to increase the competitiveness of the Finnish metals and engineering industry (MEI) by radically renewing practices. The practices are renewed by developing and implementing new design and collaboration methods that produce personalized user/customer experiences – and challenge the present ‘mindset’.

InPractice (2011-2012)

  • Digital disruption of pharmacy services

Extreme Design - project (1.6.2008 - 31.5.2010)

  • In this project, user-centred service design methods emphasizing the co-design approach were studied and developed.
  • It was part of Tekes Serve-program conducted in collaboration between three research units from current Aalto University: School of Art and Design (program of industrial design), School of Science and Technology (Software Business and Engineering Laboratory SoberIT) and Helsinki Institute for Information Technology (a joint research institution of Aalto University and the University of Helsinki).
  • Company partners covered distinct business areas having an interest in service design and co-design methods, including KONE, OPK, Palmu Inc. and Idean. The case studies indicate the wide scope of service design; cases ranged from recognizing novel partnership possibilities between three companies (BtoB) focusing on senior houses; understanding the evolving user needs during the long life span of bank services (employer and user-driven innovations), and identifying novel service opportunities within social media (user-driven innovations).
