Casted porcelain and pressed stoneware, glaze research

Zand explores the material "sand" through empirical glaze research and creating shapes.

It compares the resulting glazes from sand taken around the Baltic shores, from Helsinki to Northern Norway. Analysing the samples, recreating the glazes with processed ingredients from the lab, and seeing which ingredients create certain characteristics shown by the impurities of the sands.

Concluding the project of Zand by creating its final shape. The glazes are all showcased on that final shape: a sandbag. Reconnecting the start of the project with the research result. Each of the sandbags is unique due to the making process, hand-shaped by me or formed by the kiln.
