Design Participation techniques
The Design Participation Techniques course provides a foundation for collaborative and participatory practice through hands-on exercises and simulations.
Content
During the course participants develop design competencies for a collaborative and participatory practice through hands-on exercises and simulations that concretice what it takes to design participation today. Techniques and skills introduced are useful in choreographing design projects that mobilize creativity and participation for sustainability. Insights gained in class will help to build a personal repertoire of collaborative design practices and creative group work strategies. Exercises are mostly done in class using various materials, the space, ourselves and conceptual tools from introductory lectures. There is also a short group exercise that applies some of the ideas by designing a workshop/play session for others.
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing this course, students are able to:
- Identify participation, facilitation and sustainability challenges of collaborative design processes.
- Critically discuss and apply various collaborative and participatory techniques for supporting design work, together with other members of a team.
- Be comfortable with designing and facilitating interactive and collaborative design sessions with care, effectiveness and purpose.
