Collaboration

Universities of Applied Sciences and Aalto University

The extensive and innovative cooperation between Aalto University and the universities of applied sciences in pioneering networks will strengthen the quality of our education and Finland's attractiveness. The universities will profile, clarify and intensify cooperation and division of labour both between themselves and with research institutes in education, research, support services, structures and infrastructures.

Aalto University has a strategic cooperation agreement with Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Häme University of Applied Sciences (HAMK) and the University of Applied Sciences of Southeast Finland (XAMK). The cooperation and its priorities are based on the university's strategy.  

Our aim is to systematically open up studies into a common offering. Together with the universities of applied sciences, we will produce a joint and combined offer of studies. It is also possible for students to build a study pathway combining university and UAS studies. read more

We will also clarify the application procedures for Aalto's master's and doctoral programmes for graduates from universities of applied sciences, exploit specific infrastructures across university borders and develop interdisciplinary research projects in collaborative fields.

Examples of collaborative projects and schemes

  • The Kielibuusti project, a collaboration between Aalto University, Haaga-Helia University of Applied Sciences, the University of Helsinki, Laurea University of Applied Sciences and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.
  • Urban tech Helsinki incubator in collaboration with the City of Helsinki, the University of Helsinki and Metropolia University of Applied Sciences.
  • Campus Incubators programme with the City of Helsinki, with the aim of creating 100 new businesses per year, with seven universities.
  • The Construction Knowledge and Skills Hub - Metropolia, Aalto University and StadinAO will bring together an international network of high quality educational and research institutions in the built environment sector.
  • The Food System City programme is jointly implemented by the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, Metropolia University of Applied Sciences, Natural Resources Institute Finland and VTT.
  • Aalto University, XAMK and the City of Savonlinna are working together to develop bioeconomy innovations. To strengthen research and development activities, an Aalto University professorship in bioproduct engineering was established.
  • A five-year professorship in cyber security at Aalto University in Kotka is funded by donations. According to the agreement, the professor will spend half of his working time in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences of South-Eastern Finland (Xamk) and companies in the Kymenlaakso region. The Professor of Working Life will implement and develop cybersecurity education at Xamk and will be regularly present at the Kotka campus of the University of Applied Sciences.
  • HAMK Design Factory as part of the Design Factory network (https://dfgn.org/) is a multidisciplinary product and service design and learning platform that connects students, teachers, researchers and industry.
