Panu Savolainen (Architect, PhD in History and Archaeology) serves as Professor of the History of Architecture and Restoration at Aalto University. He specializes in the history of medieval and early modern architecture and building archaeology. His recent research has also addressed interspecies perspectives in architecture, as well as the connections between architecture, demolition wave, and sustainability. 

In the Building Extinction project, Savolainen focuses on the concepts underlying demolition and the conceptual history of demolition waves. Demolition is always preceded by mental images and the arguments based on them, which in turn rest on concepts. For this reason, it is important to understand what kinds of concepts are associated with building extinction and the demolition of relatively new buildings.
