Laura Berger works as a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Architecture at Aalto University. Berger's recent research has addressed, among other things, Alvar Aalto and his office, the history of suburban areas, post-war reconstruction, and standardized timber houses. Her teaching has focused on these themes, as well as more broadly on the Nordic context. She serves as Finland's responsible teacher in the Nordic Master in Architectural Heritage programme (NORDMAK).
In addition to academic articles, Berger has written and edited books and curated exhibitions. The most significant of these, New Standards – Timber Houses Ltd. 1940–1955, realized together with two colleagues, represented Finland at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021. Her next exhibition tells the story of Finnish suburbs and opens at the Helsinki City Museum in 2026.
From 2025 to 2028, Laura Berger leads the Building Extinction project. In her own research, Berger examines the demolition of buildings as a long historical continuum. The aim is to bring to light the reasons, justifications, and ways in which demolition has been argued for across different eras – including the present.
