LEARNING BY DOING
At the School of Arts, Design and Architecture, theory and practice meet: our teaching methods are all about making learning happen and carrying out practical projects with an open mind and courage.
Our skilled staff maintain a diverse workshop environment at our school. Experiments are possible with a variety of materials, methods and processes that support learning, research and artistic activity. Each workshop is led by a workshop master who is an expert in the field. The workshop facilitators will provide guidance on the use of equipment and tools, as well as advice on working methods. The close collaboration between the workshop masters and the teaching staff ensures a unique learning experience.

Changes in Väre lockers
All student lockers in Väre will be turned into short term lockers. The change is based on an analysis of the usage logs and has been discussed with student representatives.

3D Print
The 3D Print workshop is a learning environment where students and researchers can prototype, create and investigate additive and digital manufacturing.

ARTS Workstations
In addition to shared IT classes, Aalto ARTS offers a wide range of workstation environments, including various video editing units, 3D-modelling units, a colour-managed IT class and editing room, and other special facilities as well as expertise in all your IT needs.

Biofilia
Biofilia is a biological art unit which provides a platform for trans-disciplinary research and education. It provides artists, researchers, students and scholars with the ability to engage with the life sciences and their applications within an artistic and cultural context, thus making creative and critical links between biosciences, engineering and the arts.

Ceramics
The ceramics workshop is Aalto University’s research and education learning environment which provides expertise in the fields of ceramic art, design and short-run production

Construction Workshop
The Construction Workshop is a research and learning environment and an expert in building and materials for architectural models, buildings and building parts or scale models.
The Construction Workshop offers students, researchers and teachers the space, equipment and staff they need to create prototypes and artistic activities. The main working areas are tasks related to architectural teaching and research.
The construction workshop includes a woodworking hall, metalwork hall as well as an assembly area equipped with hand tools. There is a paint shop for surface treatment which can be used for brush and spray painting.

Darkrooms at Väre and Otakaari 1X
Otaniemi campus has two darkrooms, designed for the development of photos and black-and-white films, which can be booked for course teaching activities and for use by students.
Darkrooms are closed during summertime between 14.6.-5.8.2019

Glass Workshop
The Aalto University Glass Workshop is the most efficient, and well-rounded educational facility in Finland. It allows for experimentation with every possible glass forming technique, including hot glass blowing and sculpting, cutting/grinding/polishing, kilnforming (fusing, slumping, casting), and flameworking.

Knitting
In the Knitting Workshop, students and researchers can design and produce various knitted fabrics and products. Hand-operated knitting machines as well as an industrial flat-bed knitting machine are available for use.

Mechatronics
The mechatronics workshop is meant for working with electronics, motors and robots. The workshop is divided into two sections one part is meant for mechanical assembly and a second part for soldering stations.

Metal Workshop
The Metal Workshop is a research and learning environment. The workshop offers students and researchers facilities, equipment and technical staff to fulfill their course work and the physical part of the artistic research.

Multi-material Workshop
The Multi-material Workshop is a flexible learning and research environment which enables both course-structured teaching and individual work.

NC machining
The NC Machining/Processing Workshop is a learning environment for digital model production as well as an expert source of numerical machining/processing methods. A five-axle processing centre for wood and model building materials, three-axle machining centre for metals, and NC lathe are available.

Open Photostudio
The Open Studio is always available to students for creating course-related or personal projects.

Painting Room
In the Painting Room, students, researchers and teachers can paint and apply surface treatments to prototypes or models. It is possible to paint with a syringe, roller, brush or apply spray coatings there.

Pattern Making
In the pattern-making facility, you’ll find both the space and the equipment for creating patterns.

Photography studio
Aalto University’s photographic studio on the Väre campus is an environment for learning, research and artistic activities which provides a versatile, professional studio for teaching in our school and for use by students.

Plastics & Laser Cutting
The plastics workshop is a learning and research environment for prototyping with plastics and laser cutting.

Printlab / Bookstudio
Bookstudio Digital printshop, Väre F014
Aalto’s students and staff can order printed media products form Printlab’s Bookstudio. This is intended as a support service for teaching, research, artistic activities and communication. The workshop master at Bookstudio can help for example with printing required for courses but also provides personal guidance and makes their expertise available when you need to know more about printed products. Make the reservations for printing and materials in advance, preferably by email or by visiting Bookstudio. The equipment at Bookstudio (e.g. Pantone colour charts, paper samples, loupes, rulers) can be borrowed while in the Bookstudio facility.
Publications are printed using a laser production printer. The printer is suitable for example for the following products: A3 posters, cards, brochures, portfolios and theses. When books/newspapers are produced, the binding option is saddle stitching (staples in the middle of a sheet folded in two). The paper weight per square metre can be 52-350 g/m2 and the sheet size for example SRA3 (32x45 cm). There is a small selection of paper material suitable for laser printing in the storage room at Bookstudio, but material should be booked well in advance, preferably a week before the planned printing. You can also suggest your own alternatives for testing, as long as they are suitable.

In addition to printing, Bookstudio also has an electric cutter, a creasing and folding machine and a manual saddle stitch stapler suitable for processing the products after printing.

Printlab Fine Art Printing
In Printlab’s Fine-Art Printing service you can make high-quality prints of photographs and graphics on the best museum-quality materials.
Printlab has the latest pigment-based large format printers with print width up to 160 cm. To use the service, you need to make a reservation. The master printer/workshop master provides assistance.

Printmaking
In the printmaking workshop it is possible to study and research multiple printmaking techniques, both old and new: intaglio, silkscreen, woodcut, book binding, risograph and letterpress printing.

Sculpture
A space for creating sculpture and installation art, and for developing practical studio skills which enable you to transform concepts into physical forms.

Sewing
Various kinds of sewing work are produced in the Sewing Workshop. The variety of machines and equipment in the workshop provide good opportunities to work with different kinds of materials.

Surfacing and Chemicals Workshop
The Surfacing and Chemicals Workshop has the facilities and equipment required for work involving a range of chemicals, such as performing mold making and castings in various polymers such as silicones and resintypes as well as patination of metal alloys.

Textile printing
In the Textile Printing Workshop there are opportunities to colour and pattern textiles by dyeing, painting, hand printing and digital textile printing. The courses organized in the workshop prepare students for professional development, give them mastery of techniques and teach them to work safely with chemicals.

Transportation
The School of Arts, Design and Architecture owns a VW van, which can be borrowed. Additionally, Aalto offers campus bikes.

Waterjet Cutting
Waterjet cutting is a digitally controlled working method which can be used to cut almost any kind of solid material, such as metals, rock, concrete, glass, ceramic, wood or plastics. It is mainly used for furniture and object design and for artistic activities. Waterjet cutting offers to students, researchers and teachers the space, equipment and technical personnel for creating prototypes and engaging in artistic activities and short-run production using numerous different materials.

Weaving
The weaving workshop is a learning, creation and research environment for the structures of woven textiles.

Wood Workshop
The Wood Workshop is a learning and research environment and an expert in wood materials, woodworking and jointing techniques. The most important fields of activity are the design of furniture and objects and artistic activities. The Woodworking Shop offers students, researchers and teachers the space, equipment and staff they need to create prototypes, artistic activities and short-run production using wood materials.
