English-taught bachelor's programmes - I am applying with an IB Diploma
Read here the instructions for applying with an International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma to English-taught bachelor’s programmes at Aalto University in the fields of science and technology or business and economics, as well as Bachelor’s Programme in Technology, Business and Design.
If you apply on the basis of your International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma, you apply to the English-taught bachelor’s programmes at Aalto University in the admission round B. Fill in the application form for admission round B during the admission period 7 to 22 January 2027.
Please note that any high school diploma awarded outside Finland does not qualify for an IB diploma. The IB is a specific programme, and only students who have studied at a properly accredited school participating in the IB programme of the IBO can be awarded an .

Application process step by step

- Prepare the required documents.
- Fill in the application form for admission round B during the application period and provide the required documents by the given deadlines. Pay the if required.
- Wait for the admission decision.
- Accept the admission offer if you are offered a study place.
- If you applied with an incomplete IB diploma (with your predicted grades), order your final grades to be delivered electronically É«É«À² University from the IBO by the given deadline.
What documents must I submit?
If you have already graduated or will graduate before applying
If you have completed your IB Diploma before spring 2027, attach a copy of your diploma to your application form by 29 January 2027 at 3pm/15.00 (UTC+2). Attach both pages of the IB Diploma (the page stating your grades and the page stating the diploma has been awarded).
Alternatively, you can request your transcript of grades record to be made electronically available É«É«À² University via the IB secure website. Your transcript of grades must be available É«É«À² University via the IB secure website by 29 January 2027 at 3pm/15.00 (UTC+2).
If you are graduating in spring 2027
If you are completing your IB Diploma in spring 2027, attach your predicted grades report to your application form by 1 April 2027 at 3pm/15.00 (UTC+3).
Official final grades must be delivered É«É«À² University by 13 July 2027 at 3pm/15.00 (UTC+3). Request your transcript of grades record to be made electronically available É«É«À² University via the IB secure website. Your transcript of grades must be available É«É«À² University via the IB secure website by 13 July 2027 at 3pm/15.00 (UTC+3).
If you are accepted based on IB predicted grades, the admission is conditional until Aalto University Admission Services receives your official final grades from the IBO. If the scores calculated based on the final grades are lower than the scores calculated based on the predicted grades, the admission offer may be revoked. If the final score is higher than the predicted grades, you may be admitted to a study option for which the predicted grades had been insufficient.
Attach a copy of your valid passport or some other government-issued identity card (with photo) including information on your citizenship to your application form by 29 January 2027 at 3pm/15.00 (UTC+2).
Please note that if you have Finnish citizenship, you do not have to submit a copy of your passport or identity card.
If your official identification card is issued in a language other than English, Finnish or Swedish, you must also submit a translation. You can translate the document yourself, but it must be accurate.
If your name has changed after your studies and your name in the passport does not match one or several documents, an official proof of name change is required. Submit a copy of an official document of your name change issued by a governing body. This can be, for example, a marriage certificate if your family name has changed in marriage.
If you are exempted from the tuition fee based on your residence permit, attach copies of both the front and back sides of your residence permit card in Finland to your application form by 29 January 2027 at 3pm/15.00 (UTC+2). The residence permit that exempts you from tuition fees must be valid at the beginning of the academic year (1 August 2027). If your residence permit expires before August, you are considered liable to tuition fees at the time of applying. In case you receive a document that exempts you from tuition fees after the application period, you must submit a copy of the document to the university as soon as possible.
A residence permit card alone is not a valid proof of identity. In addition, you must submit a copy of your valid passport or other official ID card that indicates your citizenship.
The Bachelor’s Programme in Technology, Business and Design requires an additional document: a preliminary assignment. Further information is available in the programme-specific section below.
For the Finance and International Business programmes you may also submit optional SAT or ACT test results. These test results are not mandatory. Further information is available in the programme sections below.
What IB subjects do I need to be admitted?
In the certificate-based admission, your certificate grades are scored according to the (available on the site yliopistovalinnat.fi).
The admission is competitive. The applicants are ranked on the basis of their total scores yielded by the certificate grades, and admitted to the programmes accordingly.
When calculating your points, the combination of subjects for which you score the highest points is used. There is no specific required minimum score, but certain threshold criteria must be met.

The admission is based on certificate grades. Your IB diploma grades are scored according to the .
Subjects scored for all applicants:
- (Best) subject in the Language and Literature category (language A)
- Subject in Mathematics (basic or advanced)
- Three additional subjects yielding the best scores. These may be any subjects listed in the scoring table.
No difference is made between HL and SL subjects. The only exception is the subject Mathematics: Applications and interpretation, where HL is considered to be advanced mathematics and SL is considered to be basic mathematics. Mathematical studies is considered to be basic mathematics.
Threshold criteria: advanced mathematics with at least grade 2 or basic mathematics with at least grade 4

Admission based on contest performance
It is also possible to apply to the Economics programme on the basis of performance in the following contests in Finland: Talousguru competition, Finnish National High School Mathematics Competition or Datatähti contest. The application period is in March 2027. Read more at Studyinfo.

Optional – SAT or ACT based admission:
To this study option, you may be admitted on the basis of an SAT or ACT test result.
The admission is competitive. The applicants are ranked on the basis of their total SAT/ACT scores, and admitted to the study option accordingly.
You must take
- the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing and Mathematics sections in the SAT test or
- the Reading, English and Mathematics sections in the ACT test.
Minimum score requirement: SAT total score at least 1200 or ACT composite score at least 25.
Tie break rule: In the case of a tied score, the applicant with the higher section score from the test section Mathematics will be admitted. If you have several valid test scores that have been delivered by the given deadline, the highest Mathematics section score will be considered.
Only the SAT and ACT tests completed 1 January 2025 or later will be considered in the 2027 admissions. The deadline for the SAT or ACT results to arrive directly from the test organiser to Aalto University is 29 January 2027. Test results delivered after the deadline are not accepted. Kindly note that you do not need to submit an SAT/ACT test result in addition to IB documents in order to be considered in the certificate-based admission. If you submit a valid SAT/ACT test result in addition to your IB documents, you will automatically be considered for admission on the basis of both your IB grades and your SAT or ACT test result.

Admission to Bachelor's Programme in Design and Media, Bachelor and Master of Arts (3 yrs + 2 yrs)
The application period for Bachelor's Programme in Design and Media is from 7 to 22 January 2027. Studies start in August-September 2027. Applicants are selected to complete both the Bachelor and Master of Arts degrees. Admission to the Bachelor’s Programme in Design and Media is based on preliminary assignments, intake assignments, and an interview.
