Dress codes for the conferment of degrees of the School of Arts, Design and Architecture 2025

Dress codes are part of the conferment ceremonies. Masters and doctors have different dress codes. You can choose any dress code option you want, regardless of your gender, as long as you adhere to the appropriate dress code for each event. This page also contains instructions for ordering a doctoral hat.

General Dress Guidelines

At Aalto University, equality and diversity are among our core values. Therefore, you can choose any dress code option you want, regardless of your gender, as long as you adhere to the appropriate dress code for each event.

Conferment is not only an academic celebration but also a tradition and a ritual, marking the transition from student to master, or from dissertation writer to doctor, upon graduation. Events related to conferment of degrees have roles and attire that are appropriate for the occasion. Dress elevates the conferment from a commonplace event to a prestigious academic celebration.

The division of promovendi into masters and doctors is primarily visible in the dress colours typical of women: the colour for masters or their companions is white, and for doctors, it is black. Other guests may wear coloured evening gowns at the dinner and ball. See more details in the tables below.

Doctoral hats for Doctor of Arts

The doctoral hat for the School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Doctor of Art) is blue and features a lyre made from spectrolite stone, designed by Olli Tamminen.

Each doctor (excluding honorary doctors) orders and pays for their own doctoral hat. We kindly ask you to order the hat from your chosen hat maker as soon as possible. The hat is custom-made to your measurements and takes approximately 4–10 weeks to produce. In spring 2025, there are other promotions in Finland, so it's advisable to order the hat immediately upon deciding to participate in the conferment. See instructions for ordering and using the hat here.
