Bio-based Porous Absorption Materials
Research on bio-based porous absorption materials is a collaboration with Prof. Jaana Vapaavuori (Aalto University School of Chemical Engineering) and Lumir Oy. Our aim is to understand sound behavior in porous materials and develop sustainable acoustic materials them from cellulose and bio-waste.
Description
Sustainable acoustic materials based on cellulose are attracting increasing attention as alternatives to conventional mineral or polymeric sound absorbers. Foam forming has emerged as a promising manufacturing process for such materials, enabling the production of lightweight porous structures with high porosity. The acoustic potential of foam-formed materials has been demonstrated for wood fibers and more recently for plant fibers, with absorption performance comparable to conventional fibrous absorbers. Our research aims to development of novel sustainable (carbon negative) acoustical materials which could be used to control room acoustics, sound insulation in structures or even in ear plugs.
