The Doctoral Program Committee of Aalto School of Business

The Doctoral Program Committee of the Aalto School of Business is responsible for developing the content of the Doctoral Program in Business, Economics, and Finance, preparing the curriculum and admission criteria, and making decisions regarding the evaluation of individual doctoral theses, among other duties.

Members of the Doctoral Program Committee

The Doctoral Program Committee consists of a chair, 4–6 professorial members with demonstrated excellence in doctoral education, and one doctoral student member. Each member has a designated deputy. The committee is chaired by the Director of the Doctoral Program, and a vice chair is elected from among the members.

The term of the Doctoral Program Committee is four calendar years. The current committee serves until  December 31, 2027. The doctoral student representatives are appointed for a one-year term at a time, based on a nomination by the Aalto University Student Union (AYY).

Tasks of the Committee

The Doctoral Program Committee is responsible for:

  • developing the content of the doctoral program and the joint studies offered by the School;
  • submitting proposals to the School Academic Committee on the fields of research included in the doctoral program;
  • preparing proposals for the Dean regarding the admission of doctoral students;
  • appointing the preliminary examiners of doctoral theses and deciding on the permission for their public defense;
  • appointing the opponents for doctoral theses;
  • evaluating doctoral theses;
  • appointing the examiners of licentiate theses;
  • evaluating licentiate theses; and
  • carrying out other duties assigned by the Dean or specified in the degree regulations.

In addition, unless these matters have been delegated to the Chair, the Committee:

  • appoints a supervising professor and advisor(s) for each doctoral student;
  • decides on the degree language of the doctoral student and the topic and language of the licentiate or doctoral degree;
  • confirms the study plans of doctoral students;
  • decides on the time and language of the public examination of the doctoral thesis and appoints the custos for it.
