We noticed that everything went well whenever we worked on projects together, so we decided to set up HE Design Helsinki. It feels important that we can take time to define our own identity and mission, before the markets or someone else comes and does it for us.

What I miss most about the summer nights in Otaniemi are those nights when we spontaneously went to barbecue sausages and spend the night at the Servinniemi rocks.

Tommi Valjakka
I’m a bit stressed about an exam that I have in a few minutes. I don’t really have any actual holiday planned for this summer as I will participate in the summer bachelor’s programme.

When the interface of a device designed to be used by care staff only uses engineering language it is very easy for a situation to arise where many nurses do not utilise the machine’s capabilities to the full. If the common skills base between sectors was broader, it could give rise to more intuitive user interfaces.

I think that the one who is first to crack the code on how to make houses with 3D printers is going to win big time. The University of Zurich got funding of EUR 25 million to figure out how to use 3D printing on an architectural scale.

Duara develops services, which offer people the opportunity to get to know village communities in developing countries in a way that will also benefit the local community. Duara does not correspond to the traditional image of a start-up company, because we are not primarily aiming to get rich quick.

Jyri Hallikas
On the electricity workshop course we decided to examine how we could get something as high as possible at a very low cost. The practical implementation is still just teasing our imagination this summer.

I predict that the number of zombies here in Otaniemi will grow exponentially. There are bound to be some epic battles before the four day humans vs. zombies ends.

Mervi Antila and Nathalia Mussi Weidlich
We were given classic Finnish design pieces to be used as materials. Our initial hesitation to act on those pieces served as the concept for our work.

Ossian Stadigh & Kia Koskela
We met on a Skipoli-organised surfing trip, where we were all one big family. We surfed, cooked, spent time together, and enjoyed life.

Ksenija Afanasjeva
Part of our Functional Wear course was held in Munich, and I had the opportunity to visit the Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition. I got super inspired by how the clothes were presented.

Olli Heiskanen
I am proud that we are not only designing a new design item, but a product that will have a real impact and be of practical value in people's lives. It will allow elderly people to live at home longer by making kitchen work easier.

Paavo Lehtelä
I grew tired of wearing overalls everywhere. I designed my own outfit based on overalls for a new look.

Lisa Gerkens
We wouldn’t be here without assistance from Aalto University. After a lot of hard work and interactive prototyping and designing, we have managed to make a touch-sensitive nightlight for kids.

Bijan Bayat Mokhtari
During the Product Development Project course, we have made plans to improve Valtra’s bio gas tractors. It has been a totally new and inspiring experience for me to be the group manager for a team.

Natalia Berseneva
Our team is working on a PDP project for Beneq. We came up with 200 different ideas and chose the three best ones to work with.

Manuel Fonseca Martinez
A Space feels like an embassy of art & design in Otaniemi. We wanted to turn this space in an old shopping mall into a meeting point of design, business and engineering.

Research cooperation
The Department of Bioproducts and Biosystems works collaboratively with strong partners from industry and academia.

Dagur Ingi Ã’lafsson
During the PDP course, we have been working for WineMill to solve how people can enjoy more wine but less alcohol. We have built a prototype that can reduce the amount of alcohol in wine.
