Applying for the grant

It is possible to receive support for writing a master's thesis through the Helsinki School of Economics Support Foundation. The HSE Support Foundation allocates funds for thesis work according to the research areas specified by foundation donors.

Master's thesis grant

Students pursuing a master's degree can apply for a grant for full-time thesis work. The master's thesis grant can be applied for in February and September.

Thesis grant from funds donated by a partner company

You can apply for a grant for your thesis if you are collaborating with a company that makes a donation to the foundation. The company must specify a research area for its donation, and that research area must be related to your master's thesis. This grant has no specific application deadline.

Travel grant

Students can receive a travel grant for attending a scientific conference related to their thesis. The grant can be awarded based on actual costs or a best estimate. Funds for per diem expenses are not granted. Reporting must be done according to the actual costs incurred.

An applicant can apply for a travel grant for one scientific conference in their research area, and they are their presentation must be accepted for inclusion in the conference programme. The acceptance notice from the conference must be submitted to the foundation no later than the date requested for payment of the grant.

Applicants can apply for a travel grant for a trip that takes place after the application period ends. Grants are not awarded retroactively for trips that have already occurred.

A grant awarded for a conference that was postponed to the following year does not carry over; in such cases, a new application must be submitted.

Application process and reporting obligation

Progress of the application

You can track the progress of your grant application in the application service. However, please note:

• Applications submitted during an application period will be processed after the period ends.
• You will receive a ‘yes or no’ response via email after the processing.
• Awarded grants will be published on the foundation's website.
   

When will the grant be credited to my account?

Upon receiving an approval decision for your grant application, submit a payment request. The payment request is where you report how you would like the grant to be disbursed. You can make the payment request through the application service.

Grants are paid to a bank account. If you did not provide your bank account number on the grant application, you can provide it when submitting the payment request.

What needs to be reported and when?

Each grant requires reporting on how the grant was used. You will not be prompted to send in the report, so you must remember to do so yourself.

You can submit the report with expenses (e.g. flights, hotel, conference registration fee) in the same grant service where you applied for the grant. You can write the report in a free-form manner.

Taxation of grants
