Grants for researchers, doctoral students, and staff of the School of Business
Who can apply for a grant?
A researcher applying for a grant must be employed at the School of Business at least 50%, or the School of Business must be the researcher's or emeritus researcher's academic home.
Grants may also be applied for by individuals who have just recently been admitted to a School of Business research programme and are about to begin their doctoral studies.
Personal grants are only awarded to tenured staff to fund sabbatical leave.
Applying for a grant
Grants are applied for using an electronic form in the foundation's application service. Applicants must submit different applications for different purposes, for example, applications for travel grants and research grants must be submitted separately.
Typically, the application includes:
- a detailed project or research plan
- a schedule for the implementation of the project or research
- a budget for the project or research
- a supervisor's statement
- grant-specific information and
- information about other grants applied for or received simultaneously (time period and purpose)
Incomplete applications will not be processed.
Grant options
Research project grants for scientific research projects. Priority is given to research in the fields of business and economics, as well as strategically important research initiatives for the School of Business that are conducted in collaboration across different disciplines.
This grant is intended for full-time research work that is conducted at Aalto University School of Business and aimed at a doctoral degree.
Applications must include a detailed research plan with implementation timelines and cost estimates, as well as a CV. Be prepared to request a letter of reference from your thesis supervisor. Employees holding a full-time research position at the university are required to provide an explanation of their leave of absence. The application must state the year their doctoral studies began.
Amount: approx. €2 170 / month, up to a cumulative total of €26 000.
You can apply for a grant to cover reasonable costs of a language review of your doctoral thesis. The grant for the language review can be applied for at any time.
Please provide with your application a statement of the actual costs incurred, and attach copies of the invoice and payment receipt. Also include a copy of the thesis with your application.
The recipient of this grant commits to actively continue their research activities, supervise doctoral students, and perform any additional tasks that may be separately agreed upon with the department head. The institution where the professor works or has worked must commit to providing the retiring professor with the normal facilities for work, e.g. a computer and user accounts, email, phone, printing/copying facilities, and access to a (shared) office. This arrangement applies only to permanent professors who are retiring.
The application for the emeritus professor grant must include a report on the results of any previously received emeritus professor grants, along with a CV as an attachment. Applicants may need to provide the contact details of the head of department for purposes of the endorsement and commitment statements. Referees will provide these in a separate online references service.
Amount: €7 500 per year.
The sabbatical grant is intended for research and travel expenses for those leaving the Business School on sabbatical.
The application must include a plan for the sabbatical project along with a cost estimate.
You can apply for a grant for studies and research work conducted abroad.
Please note that travel grants can be applied for separately, covering course trips abroad, group study trips and conferences.
Travel grants can be applied for to cover actual costs or a best estimate of the costs of attending a scientific conference in one's own field of research. Daily allowances are not granted. Reporting must be done based on the actual costs incurred.
A travel grant can be applied for to attend one scientific conference in the applicant’s own field, and applicants are required to have a presentation accepted in the conference programme. The acceptance notification from the conference must be submitted to the foundation no later than the request for payment of the grant.
Travel grants can also be applicable for trips that take place after the application deadline; however, grants are not awarded retroactively for trips that have already occurred.
The application must include the conference's website. When applying for a conference travel grant, please indicate the conference name and location, including the country, in the subject line.
A grant awarded for a conference that was postponed to the following year does not carry over; in such cases, a new application must be submitted.
The HSE Support Foundation grants recognition awards to researchers at Aalto University School of Business for research papers published in a top academic journal, whether in printed form or in an official online version. The research may be published either as an article or a book (however, not as part of a book). The award recognises particularly meritorious and sustained research work, an outstanding achievement.
Only authors whose home university at the time of publication is Aalto University School of Business are eligible for the recognition award. The article’s publication must list the author’s academic home as Aalto University School of Business.
It is required that the authors have done everything possible without additional costs to make their article openly accessible. If the publication does not support free open access, the alternative is ‘parallel publishing’ in Aalto’s research database, which most publishers allow. More information on Aalto’s open publishing. (link to be added!)
Only one application per publication is allowed. The application must clearly identify the article’s author(s). One person from the group completes the application and provides the details of the other authors, including those outside Aalto University.
Be prepared to provide your own and other authors’ details: name, personal identity code, degree/title, IBAN bank account with BIC code, and home address. The application must include a copy of the publication and a link to it.
The recognition award is shared among the authors. Researchers at the School of Business receive their calculated share as a personal award, plus a grant covering research expenses from the calculated share of authors outside the School of Business. The grant is paid through the School of Business project account against original receipts.
If the grant recipient does not conduct research as a researcher at Aalto University School of Business, no research expense grant is paid. If the recipient moves elsewhere before the final withdrawal date of the research expense grant, any unused portion of the grant is returned to the Helsinki School of Business Support Foundation.
Amount:
1st category: €5 000 recognition award for an article published in a Financial Times, FT50 list or ABS/AJG 4* list journal.
2nd category: €2 500 recognition award for an article published in an ABS/AJG 4 list or JUFO 3 (Finnish Publication Forum) list publication.
The support foundation awards a recognition prize for a national or international patent granted to a researcher or research group at Aalto University School of Business.
Awards for patents are applied for in the same way as recognition awards for quality publications.
Amount:
€2 000 recognition prize for an invention that has been granted a national patent.
€4 000 recognition prize for an invention that has been granted an international patent, either European-wide or American.
Other grants may be awarded for specific purposes, such as costs incurred for organising conferences and events, or travel expenses for international researchers visiting Aalto University School of Business.
