New initiatives

Water usage, clean energy and food production form a complex nexus with far-reaching challenges and opportunities. Finland has the potential to be an active player in the global transformation of the water-food-energy nexus. We are planning a new multidisciplinary collaborative research centre with our long-term partner Natural Resources Institute Finland to manage the transformation and develop related innovations, technologies and products. Working together, we can tackle major current issues.

The multidisciplinary H2 Innovation Center at Aalto will enable the transition towards a sustainable hydrogen society. The centre will bring together hydrogen experts from across our schools to address critical issues. We also work with industry partners, policy makers and external research institutes. Through collaborative networks, we will continue to advance our research and make breakthroughs in hydrogen research. The aim is to pioneer hydrogen research on a global scale, starting with the establishment of a PhD programme.

Versatile and responsible use of minerals and metals is a crucial part of the energy transition. Aalto's minerals innovation research cluster will address the big challenges of the green transition, electrification, renewable energy, energy storage and the minerals and metals needed for catalysis. We educate future experts in the processing and wise use of minerals. Innovations in mineral processing and refining, and responsible mineral use are paving the way towards a fossil-free future.

The international success of national cinema is based on high-quality education. The expertise of Aalto’s Department of Film contributes to the development and growth of the audiovisual industry, strengthens exports and promotes Finland's appeal as a location for international productions. We respond to acute development needs and build long-term development and quality for the whole industry. At the same time, we want to ensure that Finnish film culture retains its unique identity in an international environment. The ambitious degree films produced by the students serve as their calling cards in the international market.
