New AI based technologies are becoming part of everyday use. The EU Artificial Intelligence Act (“AI Act”) has come into force on August 1st, 2024 with the aim of the regulation is to support innovation, encourage human-centric and trustworthy AI while ensuring a high-level protection of health, safety, and fundamental rights against the harmful effect of the AI systems. 

What should I know as an European citizen about this topic? What should I be aware as a person using these tools at Aalto University (researchers, teachers, students, non-academic personnel)? What should I know as a researcher and innovator developing new ideas and tools around AI? How can we use those tools responsibly and safely without fears of doing something wrong? 

AI Act article 4 comes into effect on February 2025: what is Article 4 of the AI Act?

Article 4 of the EU AI Act, effective February 2, 2025, requires organisations to ensure employees working with AI systems have the necessary knowledge and skills. This means staff must understand how to use AI responsibly, recognising potential risks, and ethical issues.

This important legal milestone inspired this event featuring an introduction to EU AI Act in University context and three keynotes on AI in teaching, ethical aspects of AI and AI in innovation with leading experts in the field.

The event will be organised on campus, with the possibility of remote participation. We recommend participating on campus if you wish to actively engage in the workshop discussion.

Who can participate?

This event is mainly intended for Aalto the Aalto community but everyone who is interested in the topic can participate. Some of the examples in the session are mainly relevant to those working or studying at Aalto. No prior knowledge is needed. The event is free and open to all.

  Why this event? Why on this week? What is AI literacy?  (speaker: Kristiina Kemetter. Enrico Glerean moderator/presenter.)
• 13:05 - 13:30: ABC of AI Act: what is it? 
  Does it apply to me as researcher/teacher/student/non-academic Aalto employee? Where do we have actual risks? (teaching, HR, etc) Where can I learn more at Aalto? (Maria Rehbinder, Roosa Hasu, Kristian Hentula)
• 13:30 - 14:00: AI in teaching and teaching AI: Arno Solin. 
  Should everyone learn about AI? At which level? What should teachers and students be aware of the AI tools we have?
• 14:00- 14:30: The ethical side of AI: Nitin Sawhney 
  Which human rights are at risk? What should we know as citizens of Finland/Europe/World? Can we build trustworthy services?
• 14:30 - 15:00: AI at the (academic) workplace: Jukka Luoma. 
  What can AI bring to the future of (academic) work? Can the AI Act foster innovation between universities and companies?
• 15:00 - 15:30: Open discussion (and more coffee/tea)

Schedule and location

The workshop will be held at the Aalto University Väre building, Otaniementie 14, Espoo, room F102 (1st floor) () and on Zoom (link will be sent to registered participants). The room is publicly accessible, Aalto University access token not necessary. The workshop may be cancelled if we receive fewer than 3 registrations.
