Doctoral Programme in Business, Economics and Finance

Doctoral Programme in Business, Economics and Finance is a four-year, English-language doctoral programme with three specialization areas: Business, Economics and Finance. Offered by one of Europe’s leading business schools, the program delivers rigorous research training in an academic environment defined by research excellence, intellectual independence, critical inquiry, and a collaborative, low-hierarchy culture. The programme is designed for highly-motivated and ambitious aspiring business, economics and finance scholars who have excellent analytical, critical thinking, communication, and interpersonal skills and who are willing to serve as the future leaders in the world of higher education and academic research.

Doctoral Programme in Business, Economics and Finance

The Doctoral Programme in Business, Economics, and Finance prepares graduates for successful international careers in higher education and academic research. The programme offers doctoral training in 12 majors: Accounting, Business Law, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Information Systems Science, International Business, Logistics, Management Science, , Organization and Management, and Organizational Communication

The programme is offered by Aalto University School of Business, one of Europe's leading business schools. The school holds Triple Crown accreditation (AACSB, AMBA, and EQUIS), an honor shared by only about 1% of business schools globally.

As a doctoral researchers, you will work with an internationally recognized faculty, including many world-leading scholars and experts in their fields. Throughout the programme, you will receive personalized guidance from at least two dedicated supervisors. They will mentor your development as a scholar and higher education professional and guide your research every step of the way. As a doctoral researcher, you will also join a vibrant community of fellow researchers—ambitious, curious, and highly engaged—that fosters intellectual exchange, collaboration, and mutual support.

Applying to the Doctoral Programme in Business, Economics and Finance

  1.  Apply for admission to the doctoral programme during the application period in December–January. Please note that applications are accepted only once a year.
  2. Admission decisions are made in February.
  3. If you are admitted as a full-time doctoral student, you will receive funding for the first two years of your studies from the School of Business.
  4. Doctoral studies begin in the fall, at the start of the academic year.

Before applying, ensure you meet the eligibility requirements and possess the qualifications expected of applicants.

We recommend that you familiarize yourself with the ongoing research conducted in the department or unit you are interested in before submitting your application. This will help you identify potential supervisors. You are also encouraged to contact faculty members you would be interested in working with to inquire whether they are available and open to supervising new doctoral candidates.

Please note that when applying to the doctoral program, you must identify a preliminary research topic for your thesis. Some majors also require a research plan as part of the application.

The GMAT or GRE test and language tests must be taken on 9 January 2025 at the latest.

There is also a restricted possibility to apply to full-time doctoral studies at specific periods through the 
academic year for applicants who have confirmed funding. In these cases, the applicant has to secure a 
supervising professor prior to applying and needs to attach a statement signed by the supervising 
professor in his or her application. All deadlines, validity periods of tests and other possible dates 
related to the admissions process will be given separately.

Who can apply?

Language requirements

To be eligible to apply, applicants to all majors must demonstrate proficiency in Finnish or 
English with an Aalto University accepted proof of language proficiency.  If language 
proficiency is proven by a language test score, the score must meet the minimum requirement set 
by Aalto University.

Required documents

All material that you want to be considered in the application process should be in a language understood by the people evaluating applications. Generally, this means English or Finnish. If your documents are in some other language, you should contact your applied major’s professor beforehand.

How to apply?

The application period for studies beginning in the autumn of 2025 runs from 12 December 2024 at 09:00 (UTC+2) to 9 January 2025 at 15:00 (UTC+2). The application consists of an electronic application form to which you need to upload a set of required application documents in PDF form. Late submission will not be evaluated and only complete applications will be processed.

On the application you will need to specify to which major you are applying to.

The GMAT or GRE test and language tests must be taken before the application deadline.
