Hats of a Doctor of Arts

Each doctoral graduate (excluding honorary doctors) orders and pays for their own doctoral hat. We kindly ask you to order your hat from your chosen hat maker as soon as possible. The hat is made individually to your measurements, and it takes about 4–10 weeks to produce. There are other graduation ceremonies in Finland in spring 2025, so it is advisable to order your hat as soon as you decide to participate in the Conferment ceremony.
The Doctoral Hat for the School of Arts, Design and Architecture (Doctor of Arts) at Aalto University is blue and includes a lyre made of Ylämaa spectrolite, designed by Olli Tamminen. Please order the hat without the lyre. The hat makers will attach our school's lyre to your hat. The lyre costs you 107.50 euros (including 25.5% VAT). The lyres are unique, and this is a price supported by our school. Please provide us with the information needed for invoicing and delivering the lyre to the hat maker via the survey below when you place your hat order. We will invoice the lyres collectively before the ceremony.
Doctoral graduates from the Department of Architecture wear a black Doctor of Science in Technology hat. Instructions related to this can be found on the webpage of the Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees in Technology.
Promovendis hats with the doctoral graduate's name will be delivered to the conferment producers in advance. The details of the delivery will be announced in May.

Frequently asked questions about the doctoral hats
Not necessarily. You can ask your friends or colleagues if they can lend their hat to you. As an alternative, you can ask your supervising professor if they know someone who could lend a hat. But remember, the hat should be blue and carry the ARTS lyre.
In case the hat is too large for you, we suggest you to add a band inside it to fit your head size. Remember, a borrowed hat doesn’t need to be perfect, but you need to make sure it doesn’t fall on your eyes or it doesn’t fall when you bow after receiving the doctoral hat in the act of conferment.
Yes. If you graduated from Aalto University, you can borrow a hat from your colleagues. If you didn’t graduate from Aalto University, you can wear the insignia of your alma mater, e.g. gown (no swords).
In case your alma mater doesn’t have any specific insignia, you can still participate both to the conferment procession and to the evening banquet and ball, but you should follow the other dress code guidelines.
During the Act of Conferment:
- the guests participating in the procession must carry their doctoral hat in left hand.
- the doctoral hats won't be worn during the whole act. The conferrer will give instructions on when taking off and putting back on the hats.
- During the national anthem (Maamme), all guests must take off their hats regardless of their gender.
Guest are welcome to wear their doctoral hats. However, the doctoral hats must be left at the cloak room during the banquet.
The doctoral hats can be worn again after the banquet.
